Central Passage
Matthew 5:1-12
Subject
Blessed Be
Description

The Beatitudes, which take their name from the Latin beatitudo, which means blessed. Jesus begins the sermon on the mount declaring a series of eight blessings. Thing is, these don't sound much like blessings--not even back in Jesus' day, so what are we to make of them are they aspirational? Or do they paint the picture of an idyllic heart? Or are they the ethos by which the kingdom of heaven operates--a sort of "kingdom manifesto?" How do we hear this message that tells us that God's blessing is present in the messy and the brokenness of life?
