At two, she moved with her parents, Etta Mae Hargus and Cleo Jackson Smith, to live on the Gulf Coast.  She played for her first church service at the age of eleven and became interested in organ by age fourteen. Jean studied organ and piano at University of texas where she was also a member of the Symphonic Band, University Singers, Acapella Choir and the Texas Stars Drill Team. After leaving university, she worked at Texas Eastern Transmission Company and Exxon in Houston.

In 1959, she met and married Dr. John McHenry who passed away in February of 2000.  She has three children and three grandchildren. While in Houston, Jean served sixteen years at St. Luke's Methodist Church as accompaniest for the children's choir. In 1990, Festival Hill circulated the job posting for an organist at First Presbyterian Church and in May of that year Jean moved to LaGrange and began her tenure with this congregation.

In her three decades in LaGrange, Jean has become a member of Citizens on Patrol and also plays organ for St Paul's Lutheran Church. Jean likes to attend concerts, loves gardening, sewing, watching tennis, football, and ice skating, and she is a member of the Fourth Thursday Quilters.
