Paul writes this instruction to Timothy so that he might "fight the good fight" (1 Tim 1:18) and now he closes his first letter by urging his protégé to do just that: fight the good fight. This is not Paul advocating a knock-down, drag-out struggle for the upper hand. This is Paul urging Timothy to hold fast to the gospel. This is Paul urging Timothy to remain true to his calling. This is Paul urging Timothy (and all of us) to the pursuit of righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance, and gentleness.
