PASTOR'S PREVIEW: On a Sunday lifting up JOY, we begin the gospel with John the Baptist yelling at a quote—BROOD OF VIPERS—unquote. Is this a mixed message? Maybe. Yet, John also provides some of the deepest talk about repentance in action. Turns out it looks a lot like compassion and selfless love, meaning it looks a lot like God. Here by the river Jordon, John tells us how far God is going to reclaim us and John reminds us how far we must come to meet him.
