PASTOR'S PREVIEW: Four hundred years. It had been four hundred years since the "word of God" came to a prophet of Israel. Into that long silence, God's voice speaks to John, son of Zechariah, cousin to Jesus of Nazareth. John's prophetic speech must have seemed like the sudden eruption of a long-dormant volcano. His call for repentance galvanized a people who longed for the coming of God's Messiah.
