Matthew's retelling of Jesus' entry into Jerusalem quotes the prophet Zechariah. The rightful, everlasting heir to the throne of David, it says, will enter the capitol humbly, riding a young donkey. Jesus is making a statement, a pantomime that shouts, I AM the true king. The crowds echo an AMEN, as they wave branches and pave his way with their jackets. The parade soon gives way to the confrontations that lead to a cross and we are left to decide if we shall follow the path of humility or the path of power.
