Mark gives us a beginning of the good news... That beginning takes place in the trans-Jordan wilderness with the prophetic voice of John the Baptist. John proclaims a baptism of forgiveness, while calling the people to repent—return to God. He is a wildly charismatic figure in the deepest sense, filled with the Holy Spirit, and the people flock to him to confess and surrender to the waters of baptism. Even as John calls the people to turn to God, he speaks the good news of a God who is coming to them, of the God who is coming to us.
