We begin Advent with Jesus foretelling the end of days. Mark remembers Jesus' words—spoken just before his arrest—and shares them with a community who need the hope that all will be well. Jesus tells his disciples that he will return, but no one knows the day or hour except God in heaven. "Keep awake," he says, but after two millennia, do we really have any expectation that Christ will come again?
