The 40-day Lenten journey begins with Jesus' 40-day sojourn in the wilderness. Satan comes and offers temptation, not with BAD things, but with GOOD things: nourishment, witness to Jesus' messianic identity, penultimate authority. Jesus is pointed with his answers—good ends don't justify bad means. It seems there is a right way, a wrong way, and the Jesus way.
