Description

Jonah and the big fish, and Andrew and Simon by the seashore are narratives about God's call and our response. Jonah, who is a seasoned hand at prophecy, is reluctant to follow God's call to go to Nineveh while Andrew and Simon, who are new to discipleship, are willing to drop everything to take up after a Rabbi named Jesus. That they are both call stories and there is experienced reluctance and eager naivety is not to suggest that there are only two ways to respond to God. Together, they form a spectrum that may help us examine our own discipleship with candor and courage and clarity.
