The people were amazed (shocked really) at the authority with which Jesus preached and taught. Mark gives us a "story sandwich" beginning with the general amazement, moving to an exorcism, and back to the amazement. They are witnesses, Jesus has authority in the words he speaks, but those words are congruent with the work of his hands. I wonder, in a world where authority and truth are suspect, how do we speak the gospel word so that others might hear it?
