John Calvin considered the gift of the Holy Spirit to be the defining connection that unites the believer to Jesus Christ. He declared that our faith—that sure and certain knowledge of God's benevolence toward us, founded upon the truth of the freely given promise in Christ—was both revealed to our minds and sealed upon our hearts through the Holy Spirit. The gift of the Spirit gathers, uplifts, and sends us to the world to proclaim the gospel in word and in deed.
