Deliverance from the oppressor, deliverance from the enemy, this is a prayer that comes again and again in the hymns of the Hebrew people. The Psalms are filled with language pleading to God not only for relief, but also the downfall of those who stand in opposition. This story, woven from ancient oral tradition and centuries of theological wrangling, strikes a few odd chords as it proclaims God's power to redeem. Standing on the side of the Red Sea, do we cheer liberation and praise our avenger, or do we cheer liberation and look soberly on the high cost of human sinfulness?
