The multitude—we can't properly call them Israelites yet—are now wandering the wilderness. The provisions they brought are exhausted and they have no hope of resupply. The people grumble and moan and murmur, so desperate they even look back to the days of enslavement with longing. In Egypt we had meat and bread, now we are starving. This is the murmuring tradition, the whining decades, the grumbling years. Into that murmuring, whining, and grumbling comes God's providential response. The experience of daily manna instructs neophyte God followers to trust in God. I wonder... where do we look for evidence of the provision of God?
